Norway was once in a union with Sweden. A polite way of saying ruled by Sweden and was for a long time much poorer as they had not yet ‘come into’ their oil wealth. Additionally, the Swedes allowed the Germans to march through Sweden and gain access to Norway during the Second World War. German occupation was not at all a pleasant experience for Norway. The Germans wanted the ‘heavy water’ found In Norway.
