ANDORRA - THE COUNTRY OF THE PYRENEES
ANDORRA - THE COUNTRY OF THE PYRENEES
The parliamentary, democracy of Andorra is a small, landlocked country on the Iberian Peninsula occupying approximately 468 square kilometers. It is a co-principality, meaning it has two heads of state consisting of two co-princes; the President of France and the Bishop of Urgell. The principality has seven administrative and geographic districts/parishes that form villages and cities such as Andorra La Vella its capital. Andorra, the country of the Pyrenees Mountains, is located in Southwestern Europe, and nestled between Spain (to the south) and France (to the north). This independent principality is over 1,000 years old and was incorporated as a country in the mid-9th Century.
Moreover, it is the fifth-smallest country in Europe and the sixteenth smallest worldwide. It comprises a population of about 85,000, with only 30% of Andorran descent. Moreover, its economy relies heavily on banking and tourism. The banking sector attracts significant investments and benefits from its status as a “tax haven.” Additionally, tourism, ski resorts, tax-free shopping accounts for about 80% of its revenue. However, its export sector manufactures goods such as textiles, electronics, and machinery accounting for 60% of its exports.
Andorra is primarily known for its ski resorts, duty-free shopping, and the natural beauty of its landscape, particularly the Pyrenees Mountains. It’s also a popular destination for skiing, hiking, cycling, and other outdoor activities. Additionally, Andorra is known for its unique culture and history, including its status as one of the few countries with Catalan as its sole official language. Rugged mountains, narrow valleys, and lush vegetation characterize this micro-state in the Pyrenees Mountains. It is a serene, hilly country with no substantial flat land, on an elevation of about 2000 meters (6,549 ft.). Continue reading to learn more about Andorra, the country of the Pyrenees.

HOW TO GET TO ANDORRA?
Entering Andorra, was another somewhat tedious feat, similar to four other European countries. Because it also has no train station, railway lines, or airport. As a consequence, you cannot fly directly there. The nearest railway station is in France or Spain. Therefore, depending on the origin of your journey, the best options are to take a train, bus, or fly to Barcelona, Spain, or Toulouse, France, and from there take a bus or taxi to Andorra. I highly recommend using a bus if you are on a budget for this two to three-hour-plus journey because a taxi will be too costly from either country.
Based on my experience, I recommend purchasing your bus ticket on one of the online platforms for the best prices and guaranteed seats. Furthermore, tickets are not sold on the bus, because when the bus driver arrived, he had a list of the names of ticket holders. Everyone then showed their IDs or scanned the QR Code on the tickets to get on. Directly in front of Toulouse-Blagnac International Airport, is the designated bus stop for Andorran buses only.
On arrival in Andorra La Vella, the bus stops at different points to facilitate its passengers. However, those going directly to the city should remain on the bus until they arrive at the Andorra bus station (last stop), and from there, it’s an easy walk to most hotels.

ABOUT ANDORRA LA VELLA
The city and country are similar to San Marino, another hilly country and city. However, the difference with Andorra is that once at the top of the mountain, you must descend inside a valley surrounded by Mountains to get to the city of Andorra La Vella. I will explain precisely how the country and city appear.
Visualize a tooth with a cavity in its centre. The tooth is Andorra, and the cavity, is Andorra La Vella, the capital. Another example is a dormant volcano at the top of a mountain with a deep crater. The volcano is Andorra, and the crater is the capital. These might not be ideal analogies to describe such a gorgeous country or city. However, for the curious-minded, it is the most descriptive way to explain the unusual location and setting of Andorra.
Continuing, Andorra La Vella is a spotless, scenic, serene, and enigmatic city, fully surrounded by the Pyrenees Mountains. It consists of numerous cafes, souvenir shops, restaurants, churches, museums, and of course various duty-free shops and stores. Additionally, the other six parishes/districts (including its famous Grandvalira Ski Resort in Encamp and Canillo) are minutes away. For the night owls, Andorra has a vibrant nightlife. It offers a range of options from lively clubs, bars, pubs, casinos, and nightclubs with live music, to relaxing, chill, socialize, and drink settings.
Nonetheless, it is a city with a laidback and mellow vibe, and although small, there is much to see and do. The city’s roadways are well-maintained, with a combination of inclines, and elevated, narrow streets. What’s more, there is an elevator on a lower level of the roadway, which takes people via a car park to Plaza del Poble, street level, in Old Town. Notwithstanding, most streets downtown are relatively flat and easy to traverse.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE VISITING ANDORRA?
Double-check the Weather/Temperature before planning your trip; Andorra experiences frigid winters and cool summers. The coldest months are January and February with temperatures ranging from -2 to -23 degrees Celsius (27 to -6 degrees Fahrenheit). The hottest months are July and August with temperatures ranging from 12 to 26 degrees Celsius (54 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit). Depending on your tolerance level, the temperature in Andorra might be too cold for some, even in the summer, or perfect for others. Therefore, travel with appropriate clothing and proper footwear.
Because, when I visited Andorra in March, I was expecting spring temperatures, and packed accordingly. However, on the day of arrival, I was surprised to see the country blanketed by heavy snowfall especially the outskirts of the city. However, this sight delighted many passengers on the bus who were visiting Andorra mainly to ski. Even though a couple of other European cities I had just left were already experiencing spring with temperatures ranging from 14 – 21 degrees Celsius.
In Andorra La Vella, there wasn’t any snow on the ground in the city, but the surrounding mountains were snow-covered. Consequently, the temperature ranged from about 3 degrees Celsius to minus degrees at night.
Bank Holidays – 361 not 365 Days of shopping; Andorra has four official public holidays when the entire business sector including all shops and most restaurants are closed. However, it has many other public holidays besides these, but during these four holidays, the city is literally closed. Note the dates; namely, January 1st (New Year’s Day), September 8th (National Holiday Our Lady of Meritxell), December 25th (Christmas Day), and March 14th (Constitution Day).
I experienced Constitution Day 2025 in the city, and not only were most hotels fully booked, but their room prices were three times higher before and after it. Therefore, if you are a day-trip visitor (like the many disappointed ones I met), especially for shopping, note that everything is closed, including stores during these particular holidays.

ABOUT THE PEOPLE OF ANDORRA
Andorrans are a Romance ethnic group and closely related to Catalans (an ethnic linguistic community from Catalonia, Spain). As previously mentioned more than 90% of the population are Christian, about 7% non-Christians, and the rest a mixture of different religious groups. Furthermore, Roman Catholicism is the dominant religion in Andorra. Andorra’s population has an unusual ratio with Andorrans being in the minority in their own country. Over 40% of the population consists of Spanish nationals, 30% are of Andorran descent, and the rest are Portuguese and French residents.
Generally, Andorrans are hospitable, helpful, and kind people. Everyone I interacted with including those at the hotel, stores, and even police officers, were pleasant. I must make special mention of and thank the excellent, friendly, and helpful staff at the Tourism/Information Office in Barri Antic (Old Town)…keep up the great work. Additionally, I was only too excited to have met the Syndic of the Council and speaker of the House of Andorran Parliament. What a pleasant and down-to earth gentleman.
During my visit, I met many pleasant locals, and everywhere I went I felt welcomed. In fact, before arriving in Andorra I met a very personable and helpful lady from Andorra at Toulouse Airport in Spain. We sat and talked as if we previously met, and she gave me advice on activities to do and how to get to my hotel from the bus stop.
Therefore, I am sending Caribbean warmth to Joanna, and the gentleman from the souvenir shop on Meritxell shopping Avenue (he is awaiting this article, lol). Additionally, a special hello to Miguel for the tour of the Meritxell Sanctuary, and also the Polish travel explorer I met while sightseeing (I cannot recall his name but I am sure he is reading this article).

ANDORRA SAFETY AND SECURITY
Andorra is a peaceful and extremely safe country for both residents and visitors. It deserves a place on the list of the safest countries around the world. Due to its size and small population, the police force can easily manage and monitor it. They are quite visible, and efficient in maintaining public order and safety, especially in tourist areas. Therefore petty and violent crimes are almost non-existent. Furthermore, you are guaranteed that a bag left on a table will be returned to the rightful owner.
Additionally, Andorra has enforced laws such as; it is illegal to consume alcohol on the streets, and a zero-tolerance policy for the use and possession of drugs. Therefore, you can expect to be safe on the roads because they have strict drinking and driving laws which carry a 600-euro fine and a two-month driving ban. As a result, you feel a sense of safety, and peace everywhere. Therefore, it is perfect and highly recommended, especially for female, solo travellers.

HOW EXPENSIVE ARE THE ACCOMMODATIONS, MEALS, AND TRANSPORTATION?
Prices for almost everything in Andorra were certainly not economical. Admittedly, although it is a tax-free zone, it would not make my list of the cheapest countries to visit worldwide. However, prices are not as exorbitant when compared to many other European countries.
Nevertheless, the cost of accommodation was fairly okay, but as previously mentioned, on Constitution Day the hotels tripled their prices. Transportation in the city was plentiful, with buses and taxis being the primary modes of public transport, with buses being most affordable. Expectedly, taxis were the most expensive, with ride-hailing app taxis such as Cabify, CityXerpa, and ANDY Taxi functioning similarly to Uber.
Regarding meals, the most basic dish at any local restaurant averaged a minimum of 10.00 Euros, and likewise fast food outlets.

ABOUT ANDORRAN CUISINE
Andorra’s cuisine is influenced by its surrounding neighbours Spain and France, with a strong Catalan presence. Its dishes incorporate locally sourced ingredients, especially cured meats, sausages, and wild mushrooms prepared with their own local twist. Andorrans cook lots of pasta and rice dishes, trout, and various game meats, with plenty of cream. Its national dish is a thick, hearty stew, which is most popular in the colder months. Below are some dishes you must try when visiting Andorra, country of the Pyrenees.
TOP 5 ANDORRAN FOODS YOU MUST TRY
- Escudella (the national dish of Andorra is a hearty Catalan soup that is so thick that they refer to it as a stew. It is made with pork, chicken, ham bone, veal, sausages, and beef marrow bone cooked with white beans, cabbage, rice, pasta, potatoes, pulses, and seasonal vegetables).
- Embotits (a dish made of cured meats such as Andorran sausages, ham, and black pudding. It is a typical local dish made with pasta, eggs, lemon zest, parmesan cheese, breadcrumbs, and nutmeg are also added. They frequently serve it in a broth or with accompanying sauce).
- Trinxat (a savoury Andorran dish consisting of a mixture of mashed potatoes, cabbage, mushrooms, leeks, and garlic. It can be eaten as is, or flattened like a pancake which they fry and garnish with cubes of bacon or pork).
- Trucha a la Andorra (a dish made with salmon or trout wrapped in ham and pan-fried to perfection. Additionally, another variation is to grill it and serve it with almonds, hard cheese, vegetables, and a slice of lime).
- Crema Andorrana (this is the Andorran version of the French crème brulee. However, they replace the burnt sugar on top with thick, freshly whipped cream).
TOP 5 MUST-DO/SEE SITES IN ANDORRA
- Mirador de Roc del Quer. (A viewpoint in Canillo that offers spectacular views of the Pyrenees while giving a unique experience of being suspended in mid-air air and surrounded by nature).
- Grandvalira Ski Resort. (This ski resort stretches from Canillo to Encamp, and is one of the biggest in the Pyrenees and Europe. It boasts 133 ski slopes and offers gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains. Additionally, visitors can use the cable car from Encamp to the ski slopes for a more thrilling experience).
- Sanctuary Basilica of Our Lady of Meritxell. (This sanctuary is a highly symbolic and the most important religious temple in Andorra. This religious site is located in Canillo, and houses the image of Our Lady of Meritxell (the country’s patron saint), and statues of other Andorran saints. Moreover, it offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy its artworks and gorgeous, natural surroundings.
- The Andorra La Vella Sign at Puente de Paris and the La Noblesse du Temps (“cast” clock). (Located in the heart of the city, at Placa de La Rotonda. They are near each other and are the heartbeat of downtown. The Sign displays the city’s name across a bridge over the Gran Valira River. The La Noblesse du Temps the “cast clock” is an unusual-shaped bronze clock sculpture that displays the work of Salvador Dali, and is a popular hangout spot for visitors and locals alike).
- Consell General de las Valls and Casa de la Vall in Barri Antic (Old Town). (The Council General or the New Parliament of Andorra and the Old Parliament or Casa de la Vall, are must-sees when in Andorra. Visitors can visit the old parliament, now a museum, for a small fee. However, I am uncertain if there are guided tours inside the new parliament. Nonetheless, I was lucky to be there on Constitution Day and was afforded a much-coveted tour inside).

SUMMARY
Andorra holidays are jam-packed with adventure, culture, and spectacular landscapes. Yes, it is a tiny country, but it offers much to see and do. To all intended visitors, I recommend a stay of four to five days. Take it slow and soak up all the ambiance of this breathtaking country. Besides, Andorra hosts various festivals throughout the year in other parishes, and an annual local carnival. Simply put, it is a safe, green, and serene country and an underrated gem in Europe.
Initially, my mission was to visit the last of the five European countries without an airport. Although it was somewhat tedious to get there, I enjoyed Andorra and wished I had visited earlier. It is a breath of fresh air…LITERALLY! Undoubtedly, there is something magical about Andorra the country of the Pyrenees. Go visit and enjoy.
