LIECHTENSTEIN THE LEAST VISITED COUNTRY IN EUROPE

I am almost sure many people have not heard of Liechtenstein. Well, for those unfamiliar with it, here goes. Liechtenstein is in central Europe, between Switzerland and Austria, and its capital is Vaduz. It is the only country in the world located 100% in the Alpine region. Therefore, it offers the option of ski slopes for ski enthusiasts. Moreover, it is the 4th smallest European country (Vatican City the smallest country in Europe) and one of the wealthiest and most expensive. Liechtenstein is in the top 5 richest countries in the world (by GDP per capita). Its head of state is a prince, a prime minister head of government. Liechtenstein is one of the financial centers worldwide. Read on to learn more about Liechtenstein, the least visited country in Europe.

HOW TO ENTER VADUZ, LIECHTENSTEIN?

Liechtenstein is a country without an airport. So how does one get there? Entry into Vaduz, Liechtenstein, is via Austria or Switzerland. To get to Liechtenstein, you must fly to Vienna or Zurich airport (the closest airport of 1hr and half drive), then take the train, then bus to its capital Vaduz.

ABOUT THE CAPITAL VADUZ

Vaduz, from what I heard, is the least or 2nd-least-visited European city. Maybe because the town is not bustling, neither offers much vibrant nightlife. However, there is much to see and explore. Other factors could be because there is no airport or just too expensive and low-keyed a destination, who knows! In the city, you will not see army personnel like in other European cities because it does not have an Army. Vaduz is situated along the Rhine River and is a quiet, picturesque, and clean city. It is a city void of many castles and high-rise buildings as in other European cities but is surrounded by scenic landscapes. Additionally, I saw no beggars, stray animals, or homeless persons.

INFO YOU MUST KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

  • Get your passport stamped with an official date of entry stamp at the tourist center booth or the Post in the city. It is more like a keepsake souvenir stamp than a mandatory one and costs 3.50 euros.
  • Currency – Swiss Franc.
  • Language spoken – German.
  • Liechtenstein is the only country in the Alps.
  • Crime is low or almost non-existent. I heard residents do not lock their doors.
  • Do not drop as much as a candy wrapper. Littering comes with a fine.
  • It is mandatory to have a warning triangle and a safety vest in your car when driving in Liechtenstein in case your car breaks down.
  • Liechtensteiners are big on punctuality, so never have them waiting.
  • Liechtenstein is a Catholic country. So on Sundays, except for some tourist shops, almost everything is closed.
  • Unemployment is low.
  • Liechtenstein is one of the leading manufacturers of ceramic and dentures.

ABOUT THE PEOPLE AND SECURITY

Liechtensteiners are friendly and outgoing. They are always willing to answer any question related to their country. Crime is virtually non-existent in Liechtenstein. As I previously mentioned, they have no army, and fact that I did not see any police officer, says it all. I felt so relaxed not having to hold my handbag tightly in the street, nor being alert at every moment. Who could ask for more!? A safe country relaxes the nerves, heart, and brain.

HOW EXPENSIVE ARE THE ACCOMMODATIONS, MEALS, AND TRANSPORT?

Accommodation, meals, and transport in Liechtenstein are all expensive. The accommodation prices are exorbitant. Forget looking for accommodation such as hostels and mid-range or budget hotels because they are almost non-existent. Welcome to Switzerland’s twin, price-wise …ha!

The transportation options in the city are buses, metered taxis, and bicycles. There is no railway station. However, renting a bike for sightseeing around the city is the best and cheapest option, because it is small.

THE LIECHTENSTEIN FOOD

Liechtenstein cuisines are a mixture of ancient and modern dishes. Their traditional cuisines feature mainly cheeses, bread, and meats. However, even though the meals have some European influences, they are unique to Liechtenstein and very mouth-watering.

LIECHTENSTEIN DISHES YOU MUST PARTAKE OF

  1. Ribel/Rebl – (usually eaten at breakfast, it is like polenta – a mixture of cornmeal and semolina cooked in milk, then lightly roasted in oil).
  1. Kasknopfle – The national dish (a simple dough made from eggs, peppers, etc., and served with local cheese, fried onions, and apple puree.
  1. Hafalaab – (fried cornmeal and wheat flour dumplings served with apple puree).
  1. Liechtensteiner Fish Stew – (made from fish, rye bread, green onions, celery, garlic, parsley potatoes, and broth).
  1. Torkarebl – (made from corn, milk, flour, and salt, then mixed to the consistency of porridge, fried in oil, then served with elderberry jam.
  1. Kasespatzle – (also known as Spaetzle with cheese) – Spaetzle is a type of tiny dumpling or pasta. They then add grated cheese to it and then spread on a hot grid, and topped with fried onions.).
  1. Schnitzel – (thinly sliced veal, covered in flour and deep-fried with onion.

SUMMARY

If you are looking for a peaceful and relaxing vacation in the heart of the Alps, Liechtenstein is the place for you, providing of course, you have the financial means. It is one of those secluded places overlooked by many travellers. Assuredly, I can guarantee that the bombardment of tourists, polluted air, or traffic noises will not be an issue for you. Nonetheless, if you are a backpacker or budget traveller, think twice before visiting. Alternatively, stay one or two days max because Vaduz ain’t cheap. It is a wealthy country, and like Switzerland, next door (see what you should know before visiting Switzerland). Everything is expensive, even in the low travel season. Liechtenstein the least visited country in Europe, but it is perfect for skiers. So if you can afford an extended stay, do it and enjoy. I will recommend it to all travellers, but it is not a budget-friendly destination.
