Almost everyone planning a trip researches the list of the most expensive and cheapest countries/cities worldwide, especially budget travellers. This information is pertinent to the process of elimination of the ones beyond our means. With the help of travellers like myself who have been to these countries, you now have what we need to decide and plan a vacation within budget. So, here is my list of the 15 most expensive cities to visit for vacation. Additionally, I am sharing the most popular dishes and must-see sites in these countries.

I have travelled to almost eighty countries and found these were the 15 most expensive cities to visit worldwide. They were super-expensive because they had the most costly food/meals, accommodation, transport, shopping, tours, and entertainment. Whether it is during the peak travel season or off-season, vacationing in these countries will cost a solo traveller a minimum of US$100.00 daily, This includes only the basics (transportation, breakfast, lunch and dinner, sightseeing/tours, and accommodation).
Note; My visit to these countries was during the off-peak travel season when prices are usually lower worldwide. Therefore, I base my assessment and ranking of these countries on a period when prices were at their lowest, especially for accommodation.
1. SWITZERLAND - Zurich
The Federal Republic of Switzerland is a small country in central Europe, and its capital is Bern. The city of Geneva is the headquarters of governmental and non-governmental organisations. Zurich is the largest city and economic, social, and cultural center of Switzerland. It has many mountains, small villages, alpine lakes, pristine farms, and grassland.
Switzerland is the most expensive country I have visited so far. Even the fast-food outlets are double the price compared to other cheaper cities for the same items. Additionally, your USD and Euro are worth less when converted to Swiss Francs, thus lowering your spending/buying power.
In Zurich, the cheapest accommodation, food/meals, transportation, and sightseeing/entertainment were super-expensive.

Must-try Eats/treats in Switzerland
- Fondue (this is a must-have food made from Swiss cheese. They dunk Country bread in a bubbling pot of melted cheeses (the most popular is Raclette) and enjoy with wine).
- Swiss Chocolate (of course, who can resist the temptation of enjoying some yummy Swiss chocolate).
- Papet Vaudois (mashed potatoes and leeks, stewed for hours, with added sausages).
- Rosti Valaisanne-style (a flat cake made from thinly grated potatoes, pan-fried until golden. They then serve it with sausages or bacon and topped with melted cheese and onion gravy).
- Tartiflette (grilled dish of thinly sliced potatoes, smokey bits of bacon, onions, and nutty, creamy Reblochon cheese).

- Swiss Alps (a 3.5-hour ride by train. It is a must-see and an experience not to miss in Switzerland).
- Bahnhofstrasse (shopping street), The Old Town, and Zurich-West (new and feature more designer shops).
- Lake Zurich.

2. ICELAND - Reykjavik
Iceland is a Nordic country in the North Atlantic, and its capital is Reykjavik. We know it as the Land of Fire and Ice because of the number of glaciers and volcanoes throughout its landscape. It is a volcanic country below the Arctic Circle with many volcanoes, waterfalls, and hot springs geysers, all surrounded by ice and snow-capped mountains. Iceland is the most peaceful country on earth and very unpretentious. Reykjavik does not possess many huge castle-like buildings but has lots to offer that are more exceptional than other European countries. It is also one of the most expensive and coldest countries I have visited.

- Hakarl (this is a fermented shark).
- Plokkfiskur (fish stew Icelandic-style, served with mashed potatoes and onions).
- Pylsur (Icelandic hot dog, they say it is the best hot dog in the world).
- Kjotsupa (lamb soup Icelandic-style).
- Hangikjot (smoked lamb).
- Rugbraud or hot spring Rye bread (they bake this bread by burying it in the geothermal hot spring, resulting in a crustl-ess loaf).

- The Blue Lagoon (this outdoor spa is a must-see and experience. It is a UNESCO Geopark about an hour’s drive from the city).
- Hallgrimskirkja (the largest church in Iceland at 73 meters and its tower provides a spectacular view of Reykjavik).
- Aurora Reykjavik (Iceland’s first and only Northern Lights Center that offers a 360 degrees film of the Aurora Borealis in VR Goggles).
- Haukadalur Valley and the Golden Circle (here you will find Iceland’s most famous waterfall – Gullfoss Waterfall and also Geysers, definite must-sees when in Reykjavik. Take a trip outside the city and enjoy the best of Iceland).
- Harpa Reykjavik Concert Hall and Conference Centre (an award-winning building that hosts many genres of music and orchestras throughout Iceland).
- Laugavegur (Reykjavik’s oldest and liveliest street. It consists of shops, restaurants, and bars, and it is the principal shopping street in the city).
- Lake Tjornin (a beautiful and tranquil lake in the city center. It is quite a scenic area to relax and enjoy the scenery).
3. NORWAY - Oslo
The Kingdom of Norway is a Nordic country in northern Europe, and its capital is Oslo. Norway has a stable and robust economy, with one of the highest GDPs in Europe. It is famous for its languages, oil production, glaciers, coastal fjords, eco-friendly, and its Vikings history. Norway has a Constitutional Monarch (King Harald V) for ceremonial and representative duties. However, the legislative and executive powers lie with the Prime Minister, the head of the Government. Norway is the largest and most expensive of all Scandinavian countries.

- Pickled Herring – Viking-styled (it is a traditional Nordic dish). Picture pickled cucumbers, but use herring instead.
- Raspeball, Kompe, Potetball, or Raspeball (potato dumplings served with syrup, crispy bacon, lamb, or sausages).

- Oslo City Hall “Radhuset” (a unique building with gorgeous murals both inside and outside).
- The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet Opera House (hosts many events like the Ultima Contemporary Music Festival, the Festival of the Chamber of Music, and many other events. Visitors can also participate in interesting public programs).
- The Royal Palace (if not to see this beautiful palace, then visit for the scenery, garden, and lush forest garden nearby. It offers some scenic views).

4. LIECHTENSTEIN - Vaduz
The Principality of Liechtenstein is in central Europe, between Switzerland and Austria, and its capital is Vaduz. It is the only country in the world located 100% in the Alpine region. Moreover, it is the fourth smallest and least-visited European country. It is also one of the wealthiest and most expensive countries worldwide. Liechtenstein is in the top 5 richest countries in the world (by GDP per capita). Its head of state is the prince, and a prime minister is the head of the government. We know Liechtenstein as one of the financial centers worldwide. The capital Vaduz is in the Rhine Valley and is a peaceful, safe, clean, very laid-back city, and as previously mentioned, very expensive.
In Vaduz, the least-expensive accommodation, food/meals, transportation, and sightseeing/entertainment were all expensive.

- Torkarebl (made from corn, milk, flour, and salt, mixed to the consistency of porridge and fried in oil, then served with elderberry jam).
- Liechtensteiner Fish Stew (made from fish, rye bread, green onions, celery, garlic, parsley, potatoes, and broth).
- Hafalaab (fried cornmeal and wheat flour dumplings served with apple puree).
- Ribel/Rebl (usually eaten at breakfast, it is similar to polenta – a mixture of cornmeal and semolina cooked in milk, then lightly roasted in oil).

5. DENMARK - Copenhagen
The Kingdom of Denmark is a Nordic country in northern Europe, its capital is Copenhagen. Its population is almost 6 million people, its head is a Monarch (Queen Margrethe II), and it has the oldest Monarchy in Europe. Even though there is a monarchy, the Prime Minister is the head of the government. Denmark is the titleholder of the second happiest country worldwide and is the land of the Vikings, as the locals proudly refer to it. Copenhagen is a beautiful, clean, and safe city, but very expensive.

Luxembourg is a European country encompassed by France, Belgium, and Germany. It is one of the world’s major financial and business centers and tax havens. Luxembourg is the second-richest country in the world. The capital also called Luxembourg, is one of the safest, most peaceful, and cleanest countries worldwide.
Luxembourg is a super-expensive city. However, with free public transport to residents and visitors alike, it reduces overall travel costs. Public transportation is free because it helps to curb the high carbon emissions and traffic jams. Because Luxembourg previously had the highest car density in the European Union.

- Bouneschlupp (green bean soups with potatoes and onions).
- Huesenziwwi (marinated pieces of hare cooked in wine and onions cooked in hare’s blood and sometimes carrots, mushroom, bay leaf, thyme, and sour cream).
- Judd mat Gaardebounen (smoked, salted pork which they cook with vegetables over low heat for a few hours. They serve it with a creamy sauce made from broad beans and potatoes).
- Gromperekichelcher (fritters made with grated potatoes, onions, parsley, and spices and then fried).

- Schengen (take a drive outside the city to this gorgeous city in Luxembourg, full of history. It is where they signed the Schengen Agreement and Convention in 1885 and 1990, and where Germany, France, and Luxembourg borders meet).
- Old Town/Old Quarter (UNESCO Heritage Site and commercial activities and pedestrian area. It is overflowing with many jewelry stores, chocolate, and luxury shops).
- Grand Ducal Palace (the official residence of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg).
- Bock Casemates (capable of sheltering thousands of defenders, because of its fortifications and cannon-loopholes, and underground passages hewn in solid rocks).
- Viaden Castle (a medieval, 19th-century, and picturesque castle).
- Bourscheid Castle (best viewed at nights when it is lighted. It is truly a memorable experience).
- Parc Merveilleux (beautiful fairytale amusement center located six miles from the city of Bettembourg).
7. SINGAPORE
The Republic of Singapore is a small country (second-smallest in Asia) in Southeast Asia off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. Its capital is also called Singapore and is known as the Lion City. The country is famous for being a global financial center and among the most densely populated country worldwide.
Singapore is the 2nd-richest country in Asia and 5th most visited city, with almost 6 million people. Singapore is an architectural beauty and has one of the nicest, if not the nicest airport in the world. Similarly, its airline ranks as the best or top 2 airlines worldwide. It is a spotless and safe city and has some of the most beautiful modern infrastructure worldwide. Singapore also uses capital punishment as a legal penalty for firearm, murder, or drug-related offenses.

- Chicken Rice (a simple rice dish where the rice is cooked in chicken broth, poached chicken, and chili sauce).
- Nasi Biryani (this dish comprises rice and chicken or mutton, cooked in ghee, spices, peanut sauce, and chili paste).

- Sentosa Island and Beach (this is an exciting, artificial island with several beaches. It also has other exciting activities besides the beaches).
- The Royal Albatross (this luxurious tall ship offers sightseeing along the iconic Singaporean skyline and exquisite dining options).
- The Singapore Botanic Gardens and the National Orchid Garden (the Botanical Gardens had beautiful lakes, animals, flowers, and the region’s first rubber tree orchards. Orchid Garden is nestled within the Botanical Gardens with about 600 species and hybrids of orchids).

8. FINLAND - Helsinki
The Republic of Finland is the happiest country on earth. It is a Nordic country in Northern Europe and one of the northernmost countries in the world. Finland borders Sweden, Russia, and Norway and shares a maritime border with Estonia. Its capital is Helsinki, and its population is approximately 5.6 million. Thick woodlands cover two-thirds of its land mass, thus making it the most densely forested country in Europe. Finland is a developed, safe, peaceful, and extremely expensive country.

- Gibanica (Filo pastry pie filled with cheese and eggs, it is eaten cold with yogurt).
- Leipajuusto aka Squeaky Cheese (made from colostrum, which is the milk that comes right after the cow gives birth. The curdled cheese is then baked, grilled, or flambeed, giving it the brownish finish).
- Lohikeitto (a soup made with salmon, potatoes, and leaks, sometimes dill).
- Paistetut Muikut aka fried Vendace (Vendace is a freshwater water fish that they fry and serve with mashed potatoes).
- Udet Perunat Ja Silli (spring potatoes and pickled herring, they serve it with butter and dill).
- Salmiakki (salted licorice has an unusual flavour but is a favourite Finnish treat).

- Sibelius Park (this is a scenic park with unusual monuments and a beautiful lake. I think it will be more enjoyable in the spring or summer).
- Sveaborg or Suomenlinna Island Sea Fortress (a UNESCO site built gradually from 1748, on a group of linked islands. It is a series of fortifications, tunnels, etc., built to defend the city).
- Uspenski Cathedral (Europe’s largest Byzantine-Russian style Orthodox Church).
- Visit a Sauna and enjoy life like the Finns.
- Temppeliaukio Church and Finlandia Hall (perfect examples of the earliest of Finland modernism).
- Seurasaari Island and Open-air Museum (take the public ferry to this island. It gives an insight into early Finland life because they preserved all buildings. They relocated some historical buildings to this island, to contribute to an interesting open-air museum).
- The Helsinki Cathedral and Senate Square (this is the main square with exquisite buildings, including the Helsinki Cathedral).
9. SWEDEN - Stockholm
The Kingdom of Sweden is a constitutional monarchy and a Baltic country in Northern Europe and is one of the seven Nordic countries on the Scandinavian archipelago. It shares its borders with Denmark, Norway, and Finland. Its capital, Stockholm, since 1523, is the biggest capital of all three Scandinavian countries. Sweden is one of the top 16th wealthiest countries in the world according to its GDP per capita. Its population is a little over 10 million people, and its standard of living ranks among the highest worldwide. What is most noticeable about Stockholm, Sweden? It is one of the cleanest, most digital, cashless, and expensive countries worldwide.

- Sill – Pickled Herring (a popular Scandinavian dish, for variety, they add various flavours such as mustard, herbs, garlic, etc.).
- Akottbulllar – Swedish Meatballs (traditionally, they serve this with mashed potatoes, lingonberry jam, or brown sauce).
- Smulpaj – Crumble (made with fruits or berries in season and the dough of oatmeal, sugar, flour, and wheat).

Stortorget is a quaint, medieval public square in Gamla Stan. This is the oldest square in Stockholm).
- Grona Lund – Green Grove (beautiful but small amusement park on the sea-facing side of Djurgarden Island in Stockholm. It was founded in 1883 and is the 8th oldest amusement park worldwide).
- Royal Swedish Opera (for live shows and gorgeous architecture. It is a favourite of ballet and opera enthusiasts, and there is a fee to enter).
- Mariefred Town – Gripsholm Castle and Lake Malaren (in Strangnas Municipality. The major attraction is Gripsholm Castle aka Gustav Vasa’s castle. It was built in 1537 and surrounded by Lake Malaren).
10. THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES - Dubai
United Arab Emirates (U.A.E) is in the Middle East, and its capital is Abu Dhabi. It comprises seven states/emirates, with Abu Dhabi and Dubai the two most famous and Dubai the most populous and tourism-driven. The United Arab Emirates is one of the 5th-richest countries in Asia/Middle East. Dubai is a luxurious and high-end environment, and its facades are enough to cause many to dream of a visit.
Dubai is a city of skyscrapers, ports, and beaches, alongside business and commerce. It is a religious-tolerant city with many Hindu temples, churches, and mosques. All coexist peacefully, with Islam as the majority religion. The city is crime-free with many made-made islands. Dubai is very safe, clean, and beautiful but with an expensive price tag.

- Khuzi/Ghuzi (roasted lamb or mutton served on top of rice, vegetables, and nuts).
- Al Machboos (a dish of fish, red meat or shrimp, rice, and a special ingredient of dried lemon. They serve it with a salad).
- Shawarma (a flatbread with chicken, beef, and fresh vegetables as the filling).
- Al Harees (one of the most traditional U.A.E dishes. This is a porridge-like meal made with meat and wheat and cooked for more than four hours).

- Palm Island (made up of three artificial islands. Visit this amazing place by boat tour. It is home to the Burj Al Arab hotel. For the view of the entire island, a helicopter tour will be best).
- Abu Dhabi and Ferrari World (take a day trip outside the city and visit Abu Dhabi and enjoy its beauty. Visit Ferrari World, which has the world’s fastest roller coaster).
- Dubai Marina (this man-made luxurious waterfront is graced with amazing skyscrapers, hotels, malls, exclusive residences, and cool ocean breezes).
- Jumeirah Public Beach (this fabulous beach is free to the public. The entire area is perfect as a hang-out spot, to have drinks or enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants).
11.THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA - New York
The United States of America is on the North American continent, and its capital is Washington, D.C. It is the 3rd-largest country in the world. The country has many states to choose from for any vacation, with Florida and New York being the most popular. New York, popularly known as the Big Apple, is for those craving the “buzz” and who love a fast-paced and hyped vacation.
There is something magical about New York. No matter how many times you visit, it never gets mundane. From the hustle and bustle, the bright lights of an incomparable nightlife, and the 24/7 activities, you will definitely fall in love with NYC. Of course, all this comes with a huge price tag, making it an expensive city to visit for a vacation.

- The Brooklyn Bridge (opened in 1883, connects Brooklyn and Manhattan and provides a spectacular memorial and view of the city’s skyline).
- Times Square and Broadway (the heartbeat and vibrancy of the city, it is a definite must-see. Visit Broadway for the theaters).

12. IRELAND - Dublin
The Republic of Ireland is an Island in the North Atlantic Ocean off the coast of England and Wales. It is a European country with jovial citizens, nicknamed the Emerald Isle, and its capital is Dublin. Ireland’s population is over 5 million people, and it is famous for its writer Oscar Wilde and is also the home of the premiere Guinness beer. The city boasts many medieval, Georgian, and modern architecture and fascinating history. Dublin is a city of the famous craic (crack) or joke because of the friendliness of the people. However, it is an expensive city in every aspect.

- Temple Bar and Street (one of the liveliest and most happening tourist destinations, with many bars, cafes, shops, and hangout spots in this area).
- Take a train ride to Howth for a day of relaxation, visit the Howth Castle.
- St. Stephens Green (one of the most beautiful parks in the city).
- Do the Guinness Storehouse tour (sample the Guinness, truffles etc).
13. ISRAEL - Jerusalem
Israel is in the Middle East, along the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea. Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and Egypt border it, and its population exceeds 9 million. Israel is the 3rd-richest country in the Middle East/Asia and is the only country in the world where they speak Hebrew. It is the 3rd-holiest city after Mecca and the religious and historical epicenter of the world.
Jerusalem, the capital, is unlike any other city I have visited. It is a vibrant city and is inviting to all, including Jews, Muslims, and Christians, no matter your religion. It is a melting pot of visitors from almost every country and religion and is truly an extraordinary place. Consequently, it makes it one of the more expensive countries to visit.

- Cholent (a traditional Jewish stew made with beans, barley, meat, and other seasonings. They usually cook it on Fridays before the Sabbath. The meal consists of rice and fish cooked in coconut milk, chili, and other additions like boiled eggs, cucumber, fried chicken, and anchovies).
- Falafel (chickpea fritters enjoyed with pita or lafa bread, hummus, tahini paste, or garlic-flavoured yoghurt sauce).
- Hummus (a spread or paste made from mashed chickpeas, tahini paste, lemon, juice, and garlic).
- Israeli Salad (known as the national dish. It is made from finely diced tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, and sometimes onions, and dressed with olive oil, and lemon juice).

- The Garden of Gethsemane (known as the oil press. It is located at the bottom of the Mount of Olives, and was a place where Jesus retreated).
- The Jewish Markets and Mea Shearim (from spicy scents, to food, clothing, and souvenirs. This lively market was somewhat the only reasonably priced location in Jerusalem and a definite must-visit).
- Israel Museum (the world-leading encyclopedic museum. Founded in 1965, and features the most extensive holdings of biblical and Holy Land archaeology worldwide).
- The Mount of Olives (including the olive trees still alive since Jesus walked on earth).
- The Tower/Tomb of David and The Cenacle – (the Cenacle is the room of the Last Supper. The tower of David and his tomb are also definite must-sees).

Hong Kong is on the South coast of China. Its capital is the City of Victoria or Victoria City. Its population is almost 7.5 million, and it is a democratic country. Hong Kong is one of the wealthiest countries in the world. Victoria, a former British-dependent territory initially named Queenstown. It is an aesthetically clean city with the most impressive skyline (especially at night). Its skyline is most beautiful, especially when the buildings are lit-up at night with the night show. Love Dim Sum? Then you are in the right place because Hong Kong is another Foodies’ paradise, from traditional to fusion food. The city has many modes of public transportation, which is the only inexpensive thing.

- Roast Goose (goose roasted over hot coals to achieve a delicious flavour, and crispy skin. They serve it with white rice, and plum sauce).
- Wontons (traditional thin-skinned dumplings filled with shrimp or seasoned pork and flavoured with sesame oil, soy sauce, and yellow chives).
- Snake soup (soup with the snake being the main ingredient. They believe it has medicinal and nutritional benefits and promotes a more youthful appearance).
- Lo Po Bang – Wife Cake (a traditional pastry with a flaky exterior. It is made with cabbage or vine leaves stuffed with rice, winter melon, almond, sesame, and five-spice powder).
- Har Gow/Gao – Shrimp dumplings (this is a dumpling made of wheat starch, tapioca, and lard. The filling comprises bamboo shoots and shrimps).
- Jyu Cheung Fan – Steamed rice roll (sheets of paper made from rice flour, glutinous rice flour, and water and filled with barbecue pork or shrimp. They roll it and serve it with sesame or soy sauce).

- Ocean Park (one of the world’s best theme and amusement parks. It is ranked 7th in the world. I highly recommend this park).
- Hong Kong Disneyland (this is the largest theme park in Hong Kong).
- Sky 100 Observation deck (one of the tallest buildings worldwide, at 393 meters above sea level. It is an impressive skyscraper on the 100th floor and offers a 360 view of Hong Kong city).
- Tsim Sha Tsui (a major tourist hub for shopping and beautiful sites. They refer to it as the Hong Kong Hollywood Walk of Fame).
15. QATAR - Doha
Qatar is a Middle Eastern country, and Doha is its capital. It is one of the seven countries that surround the Persian Gulf. The country’s population is almost 2 million, with only 15% Qatari citizens. It is the first Arab nation to have hosted the FIFA in World Cup tournament 2022) and is the former Asia Football Cup (AFC) Champions (2019). Qatar is the wealthiest country in Asia/Middle East and is super clean, safe, and architecturally impressive. However, it is also an expensive country to visit.
